Forest make new Gimenez bid but still short of Feyenoord's valuation

Transfer news live: Premier League latest updates and more (11)

Nottingham Forest have made a fresh bid for Santiago Gimenez but the offer is still thought to fall below Feyenoord’s valuation of the striker.

Forest have stepped up their efforts to sign the Mexico international, 23, after failing to complete a deal for Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah.

Forest could not finalise an agreement with Nketiah despite agreeing a package worth around £30million ($39.6m) with Arsenal. Crystal Palace are now considering a move for the 25-year-old.

James Rodriguez close to Rayo Vallecano move

Transfer news live: Premier League latest updates and more (24)

James Rodriguez is close to signing for La Liga side Rayo Vallecano.

The 33-year-old is a free agent after he rescinded his contract with Brazilian club Sao Paolo earlier this summer. He is expected to sign a one-year deal with the Spanish side with the option of a further 12 months.

Rodriguez starred for Colombia at the Copa America in June and July. He registered six assists and one goal at the competition in the United States as Colombia were beaten by Argentina in the final, winning the Golden Ball award for the most valuable player and earning a spot in the team of the tournament.

City have considered Orri Oskarsson move as Erling Haaland back-up

Transfer news live: Premier League latest updates and more (31)

Manchester City have considered a move to sign coveted talent Orri Oskarsson from FC Copenhagen as back-up to Erling Haaland.

The reigning Premier League champions now seem unlikely to pursue a deal for the 19-year-old striker but they are firm admirers and he is set to depart Copenhagen before the summer transfer window closes.

Oskarsson has emerged among Europe’s most prolific attackers, starting the season with seven goals in 11 appearances and attracting a host of suitors. It is anticipated the Iceland international will leave for around €20million plus add-ons.

Van Dijk giving nothing away on his Liverpool future

Transfer news live: Premier League latest updates and more (38)

Following today's 2-0 home win over Brentford, Virgil van Dijk told Sky Sports that he is “very calm” about his future at Liverpool as he enters the final season of his contract. Van Dijk last signed terms at Liverpool in the summer of 2021, having missed the majority of the 2020-21 campaign through injury.

“I’m very calm,” Van Dijk told Sky Sports. “I want to play the best season I can, again. I want to be important and stay important for the club this year.

“Whatever happens next year, we’ll see. Everything happens for a reason, that’s how I see it.

“There’s been no changes in my situation but I’m very calm about it, there’s no reason for me to sit down and start thinking about something else because I have the whole season to play. Hopefully, it’ll be a successful one.”

Real Madrid's Nico Paz completes Como move

Transfer news live: Premier League latest updates and more (45)

Nico Paz has joined Serie A side Como from Real Madrid.

The Athletic reported earlier this week that Madrid had accepted a €6m offer from Como for the 19-year-old attacking midfielder, who has signed a four-year contract with his new side.

The deal also includes a right of first refusal to re-sign him and buy-back clauses through to 2027, with the fee gradually increasing per year.

Como are coached by former Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas. After winning promotion last season, they lost their opening Serie A game 3-0 against Juventus last Monday. They are back in action tomorrow when they host Cagliari.

Frank 'does not know' whether Toney will be at Brentford after Friday's deadline

Transfer news live: Premier League latest updates and more (57)

Thomas Frank admits he does not know whether Ivan Toney will be at Brentford after Friday’s transfer deadline.

Toney’s future has been the subject of speculation for over a year and the striker has not been included in Brentford’s squads for their opening two Premier League matches of the season.

The 28-year-old is the subject of interest from Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli and is into the final year of his Brentford contract.

Frank was again questioned on Toney’s future following his side’s 2-0 defeat at Liverpool.

“No, when we beat Liverpool at home a couple of years ago we played with Wissa and Bryan up front,” Frank said when asked by Sky Sports if his side missed a physical striker against Liverpool.

“I think we’ve got a good squad, we’ve done some good business. Nothing big I need or I want.”

Asked specifically whether he expects Toney to be at Brentford following the transfer deadline, Frank replied: “That I don’t know, let’s see what will happen.”

Ancelotti confirms Lunin to remain at Real Madrid

Transfer news live: Premier League latest updates and more (64)

Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Andriy Lunin will remain at Real Madrid ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline.

The Athletic reported on Saturday that Lunin would not be leaving, despite previously being linked with a move away.

“He's going to stay,” Ancelotti said after Madrid’s 3-0 home win over Real Valladolid.

Lunin came into the team for loanee Kepa Arrizabalaga last season, after the Chelsea goalkeeper had been brought in as cover for the injured Thibaut Courtois, and ended the campaign with 12 clean sheets in 31 appearances.

Lunin, though, has now returned to his previous role as Courtois’ understudy, following the Belgian’s recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The Athletic also reported that Lunin was close to signing a new Madrid contract until 2028. The decision over his renewal now rests with the club.

Nusa scores first Bundesliga goal for RB Leipzig, but how good is he?

Erling Haaland is no longer the brightest young thing in Norwegian football.

That honour now belongs to 19-year-old Antonio Nusa and, week by week, more people are starting to know his name.

Naturally so. Nusa is a two-footed wide forward with gliding pace and beguiling skill, who can drive with the ball or caress it around the tightest corners. You already pity the full-backs who have to face him.

The Norway international scored his first Bundesliga goal for new side RB Leipzig yesterday during their 1-0 win over VFL Bochum.

But how good is Nusa?

How will Merino fit into Arsenal's midfield?

Transfer news live: Premier League latest updates and more (89)

The left side of the midfield has been a slight sticking point in Arsenal’s build-up across the past calendar year, particularly since Granit Xhaka left last July to join Bayer Leverkusen.

The original idea of playing Kai Havertz, signed from Chelsea in that same window, as the left-sided No 8 did not quite bring the fluid ball progression that it promised on paper.

Moving Declan Rice, another bought in the summer of 2023, into that box-to-box role has proven to be an effective solution. But this system places a lot of strain on the three starting midfielders to perform at a consistently high level as the games stack up and the pressure mounts during the run-in.

Mikel Merino’s arrival would help to lessen the burden, a dependable figure who has averaged over 40 appearances per season across his six years with Real Sociedad. He is comfortable playing in that left half-space, where Xhaka used to reside, although he is more of a box-to-box athlete than a tempo-setter from deep.
