Mission

University of California Press has served as a bridge connecting the academic world and curious readers worldwide for over 125 years. We publish books and journals that shift paradigms in the arts, sciences, humanities, and social sciences, with a focus on social justice. Our work amplifies bold, diverse perspectives and inspires critical thought and action. We believe in the potential for scholarship to fundamentally change how people think, lead, and live.

To advance the mission and vision of the University of California Press, we center diversity and inclusion in all of the work we do as a publisher, an academic organization, an employer, and as members of our Bay Area community. In scholarship and in the publishing industry, we must confront long-standing systemic inequities that have historically excluded diverse perspectives. We aim to cultivate a community of authors, staff, leadership, and readers that reflect the diversity of knowledge and lived experiences informed by race, ethnicity, gender identities and expressions, sexuality, age, abilities, criminalization experience, immigration status and socio-economic status. We are committed to supporting progressive ideas that drive essential change––in our industry, in our communities, and around the world––and we honor this commitment by prioritizing a diverse range of voices, and practicing accountability and equity at every stage of the publishing process.

Established in 1893 as a modest publisher of monographs by University of California faculty, UC Press emerged as a world-class university press in the early 1950s. Today we are one of the six largest university publishers in the United States, and the only one associated with a public institution. As the nonprofit publishing arm of the University of California system, UC Press functions as a unit of the Office of the President and is not associated with any one campus. In disseminating scholarship of enduring value to diverse audiences, we support the UC mandates for research, teaching, and public service.

Book Publishing
UC Press publishes bold, forward-thinking titles in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, all of which undergo a vigorous peer review process.

Journal Publishing
With a global circulation, UC Press journals span the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, with key subject areas that include history, the environment, public health, literature & criticism, film & media, music, religion, and sociology.

UC Press Foundation
As a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the UC Press Foundation raises funds to support UC Press and its vital role as an independent, progressive publisher. Donations from individuals and institutions enable UC Press to publish nearly 200 new books and over four dozen multi-issue journals annually, maintain thousands of backlist titles in print, and offer the finest scholarship in digital formats.
