Altizer STAUNTON Mary Francis "Sissy" (Knott) Altizer, 52, of 117 Stafford St. went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at her home following a short battle with cancer.
Mrs. Altizer was born July 8, 1956, in Staunton, daughter of Kenneth R. Knott of Staunton and the late Kathleen Fay Knott. Mary was employed at Mary Baldwin College. In addition to her mother, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold G.
Altizer. She is survived by her children, Mary V. Altizer, Richard L. Jackson Ronald G. Altizer and Liz Johnson; seven grandchildren, Richard L.
Jackson Jr. Desiree, Eric, Brandon, Trenton, Emma and Hannah Altizer; two sisters, Debbie Woods and Barbara Scott; a half sister, Sandra Graham; two nieces, Amanda Mason and Stephanie Balser; two nephews, Trampus Woods and Wilburt Balser; and a special friend and companion, Bill Crenshaw. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends following the service. Thomas WAYNESBORO Douglas "Buck" Eugene Thomas, 58, of 51 Pinebark Drive passed away Tuesday morning, Jan. 27, 2009, in an automobile accident. He was born June 6, 1950, in Staunton, son the late James Raymond and Virginia James Thomas. Doug was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was in his 23rd year of working at McQuay. He was a devoted husband, loving father and a clown through and through, and he was looking forward to seeing the Steelers win on Sunday. Doug loved music, watching movies and traveling, and he was interested in history. He is survived by his wife, Ginger K. Thomas; one son, Matt Thomas of Waynesboro; one brother, Dennis Thomas of Las Vegas; and two very special nephews, Dallas and D.J.
Curry. He also is survived by other nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers-in-law and several cousins. A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes by Pastor Bob Johnson.
Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Paul Cline, Mike Berry, Raymond Welcher, Gene Potter, Barry Fisher and Steve VonSchilling. Jan. 28, 2009, at Shenandoah Nursing Home in Fishersville. He was born Nov. 2, 1921, in Djember, Java, in the former Dutch East Indies, of Dutch parents, the late Dr. A.J.
Ultee and Daisy F.C.M., Corporaal of the Netherlands. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dr. Judith of Alumunecar, Spain, on Feb. 12, 2007. While in Camden, S.C., he was preceded in death by his second wife, Virginia Kennedy Ultee, on Dec.
14, 1978. In 1979, DuPont transferred him back to Benger Lab in Waynesboro. In 1982, he met and married Mary Deffenbaugh Ultee, who survives him. After 11 years at Utrecht University, Ultee earned cum laude degrees with a doctoral in chemistry and master's degrees in plant physiology and math. He worked for three years in wool chemistry, and then in 1954, immigrated to the United States to work for the DuPont Co.
at Benger Lab in Waynesboro. He ended his career there as a research associate in 1990 after nearly 37 years. While at DuPont, he was involved in the early development of Lycra, as well as working on other fibers there and in Camden. He was the author of some 20 publications and had his name on six U.S. patents.
After retiring, he became active in growing currants and gooseberries with his stepson, John Trainum. He also started a sevenyear study of Farsi as a senior scholar at the University of Virgina in order to read the medieval literature of Persia. He belonged to many societies in relation to philatelic study groups, as well as mycological interests, being an avid mushroom collector. He co-authored with Dr. Albert Casceiro a topical catalog of mushroom stamps in the late 1990s.
He is survived by five children and six grandchildren, Dr. Maarten Ultee Michiel and Ultee son, Tuscaloosa, Dr. with wife, Dr. Pat Dedert, and two sons, Jeffrey and Tim, of Hillsborough, N.J., Dr. R.
Frank Ultee with wife, Bea, and daughter, Elizabeth, of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Drs. Hans Coops of Utrecht, Netherlands and Irene Ultee and husband, Dr. Mark McClenahan, and sons, Alex and Jonathan, of Fredericksburg. Also surviving are five stepchildren. Dr.
and Mrs. Richard Anthes of Boulder, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Anthes of Arlington, John Trainum and Mr. and Mrs.
Clay Trainum of Waynesboro and Mr. and Mrs. David Pepin of Fairfax. There will be a private burial in Riverview Cemetery and a memorial service at a later date to be announced. McDow Funeral Home is handling the burial.
