    FAQs

Can I freeze fresh basil? ›

ANSWER: Yes, you can freeze fresh basil leaves, but they just need a little help. Basil is a particularly delicate herb because it hates the cold and darkens when cut. Keep in mind any fresh herbs that you freeze will not be entirely the same as fresh. Freezing will change the texture and it won't be as stable.

What is the hack for keeping basil fresh? ›

For a bunch of basil you'd like to keep around more than a couple days, take a cue from food director Chris Morocco. The best way to keep basil fresh, he says, is to trim the ends of the stems as you would a bouquet of flowers, and then place the cut basil in a glass jar, tall vase, or glass of water.

What to do with a large harvest of basil? ›

If you have a TON of basil, freezing is a great way to preserve it so you can use it for months. Freeze fresh basil: Bring a pot of water to a boil and blanch the fresh basil leaves for 10 seconds. Immediately plunge the basil into a bowl of ice water.

What is the best way to preserve fresh basil? ›

Lay the leaves in a single layer on parchment or plastic wrap. Roll up, slip the paper into a resealable freezer bag, remove excess air and freeze for up to 3 months. Use the leaves straight from frozen for any cooked dish; you can chop them first if you like.

What do you do with too many basil leaves? ›

    Freeze Whole Basil Leaves

Freezing basil is one of the quickest ways to preserve it for months to come. Large batches can be done in no time and the flavor of the fresh leaves is locked in.

Why should you not refrigerate fresh basil? ›

“Storing basil in your regular fridge may cause it to turn black prematurely,” says Frymark. “[Instead], packaged basil should be kept on the kitchen counter away from direct sunlight or other sources of heat.”

How do you perk up fresh basil? ›

The secret tool is ice water. Fill a large bowl with ice and cold water. Remove any bruised or blackened leaves, and then submerge the wilted herbs, stems and all, into the ice bath. The cold water will shock the herbs back to life.

What stops bugs from eating basil? ›

An insecticidal soap can help to control aphids and other soft bodied pests. Spray early in the evening and pay attention to covering the underside of the leaves as well as above. Made from Neem, azadirachtin, will help control a number of pests including aphids, beetles, thrips, spider mites and whiteflies.

How long does basil last once picked? ›

Wash and dry the leaves, using either a paper towel or a salad spinner. Wrap the basil leaves in a dry paper towel and place inside a plastic bag. Seal and store for one to two weeks.

Does basil keep growing after you pick it? ›

Basil will return if you harvest it properly, but cutting it to the ground isn't recommended. Be sure to prune from the top down and only trim about one-third of the way down to allow the plant to regenerate.

Is it better to freeze or dry fresh basil? ›

These leafy herbs aren't ideal for air drying due to their high moisture content. They must be dried quickly, or they will turn dark and mold. You lock in that wonderful flavor and beautiful green color by freezing the basil plants and storing them in freezer bags.

What can I do with basil so it doesn't go bad? ›

If the basil is mostly leaves, store them loosely in a plastic bag on the counter. “It doesn't need to be airtight as the leaves of fresh basil will release water, which can make the leaves go bad faster,” she says. Avoid over-handling the basil, which can bruise the leaves and limit their shelf life, MacIsaac says.

What to do with fresh basil at the end of the season? ›

Simply harvest the fresh basil, wash the leaves, allow them to dry, and then slice the tender leaves into thin ribbons before adding them to an ice cube tray with enough olive oil to cover. Freeze the tiny cubes of oil solid before turning them out and transferring them to a freezer bag for long term storage.

How to fix too much basil? ›

Puree some basil and olive oil in a food processor, and freeze the mixture in an ice cube tray. You can also blanch and freeze whole leaves, or dry them in the oven.
